This magnificent fresco of Rafael represents the image of the Lady that suffers by seeing Christ that transports his cross.
He painted it for the monks of Oliveto Mount, of the monastery denominated S.Maria dello Spasimo of Palermo,
the Church, (original of the XV century, was destroyed succession of the last war events) it stays in that part of the city already known as "Kalsa," the Arabic district in the Mandamento Courts.
In 1506 it begins the history of the "Pang" when the Palermo's giureconsulto James Basilicò gave to the Fathers lands of Oliveto Mount.
The history of this paint is a lot fascinating.
The completed paint, came transported by sea to Palermo, but, to succession of a storm that sunk the ship, the crew finished in sea and all the load came lost. Only this image, being closed in a box was saved, and it came transported by the sea up to Genoa
The recovery appeared like a divine intervention, there took care of her also if it came found again completely uninjured.
Even the winds and the waves in their fury had respected of the beauty of a such job.
When the news of the recovery dispersed, the Palermo's Monks tried to regain the painting and they with the intercession of the Pope got it, compensating all those that the they preserved it.
The painting came transported in Sicily and disposed to Palermo, in the place where it was  destined.
After few years the Spanish Prince that governed Palermo removed from his place to give it to Phillip V King of  Spain, and since then the magnificent painted has exposed to the Museum of the Prado in Madrid.
As Sicily has stayed private of one of his jewels, as Phillip V described the moment when he received
the fresco:

.. "it is the most precious jewel of the world."


RAFAELLO SANZIO
(born April 6, 1483 at Urbino, dead April 6 1520 at Rome)
Painter and Italian Architect of the Renaissance.
He is considered the biggest and most popular considered artist of  all times.
Raffaello Santi (Raffaello Sanzio), he received his first training to 
the art from his father, the painter Giovanni Santi.
He died at an age of 37 years.
On his grave, in the Pantheon, Rome, it is affected a Latin phrase
of Pietro Bembo that tells:
Here Rafael lies,
 from which the nature was afraid,
 while he was alive,
  to be defeated;
   but,
 as now that he has died,
  it fears to die irself.
