Sicilian's Monuments History |
Selinunte |
|
Founded from the Greek of Megara Hiblaea versus 628 b.C., Selinus (name that derives from "selinon," the wild diffused parsley of the zone, and represented in the ancient local coins), it was the more western Greek colony of the island. It reached in the 5th Century an extraordinary development and flourishing; in 409 a.C. was destroyed by the Cartaginesi. Repopulated by the work of the Siracusa's Ermocrate, it had a difficult life up to the the Punica war, when it was destroyed definitely by Cartagine. An earthquake probably in Byzantine epoch, contributed to reduce the monuments to a heap of ruins, and during the Mid-Age each trace of the city was lost. |
